Inspiring Future Engineers Through STEM

At Scanjet PSM, innovation and technical expertise are at the heart of what we do. That is why we believe it is important to support initiatives that encourage young people to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and discover the many exciting careers available across STEM industries. For many years, PSM has supported STEM education as a STEM Ambassador, working with our local school to give them an insight into the world of engineering.

This year, our STEM Ambassador was able to support students taking part in the Mid Sussex STEM Challenge, helping them put their engineering and problem-solving skills to the test. Teams competed by designing and racing potential energy vehicles, putting STEM concepts into practice through a practical, hands-on and fun challenge.

For students, activities like this provide the chance to gain experience beyond the classroom and see how their knowledge can be applied to a real-world problem. Designing a vehicle, testing how it will move and making improvements all require an understanding of engineering concepts, as well as creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Bringing STEM to life

STEM education is about much more than learning equations or understanding scientific principles. It helps young people develop the skills and confidence that can open the door to a wide range of careers in STEM.

This is where initiatives such as the STEM Ambassador programme can make a real difference. STEM Ambassadors are volunteers from a wide range of science, technology, engineering and mathematics backgrounds who give their time to connect young people with the world of work. They can visit schools, support STEM clubs, take part in activities and share their own experiences of working in STEM.

For a young person considering their future, meeting someone who works in engineering can give them a real insight into the industry and show them the many different career paths available. There is a wide range of opportunities within engineering, from design and manufacturing to electronics, software, marine engineering and more.

Supporting the engineers of tomorrow

For companies like PSM, encouraging young people to consider a career in engineering is particularly important. The marine industry relies on skilled engineers and specialists to develop solutions that keep vessels operating safely, efficiently and reliably. As the industry continues to evolve, we will need new talent to bring fresh ideas and problem-solving skills to the challenges ahead.

Supporting STEM events locally gives businesses like ours an opportunity to play a small part in that journey. It allows us to share our enthusiasm for engineering, encourage students to ask questions and hopefully develop an interest into a future career.

We are proud to support STEM initiatives in our local community and to play our part in inspiring the engineers, scientists, technologists and mathematicians of the future.
